What is Heat soaked glass?

Heat soaked glass is a type of tempered glass that has undergone a secondary heat treatment process known as heat soaking. The purpose of heat soaking is to identify and eliminate tempered glass that has the potential to spontaneously shatter due to nickel sulphide inclusions.

During the heat soaking process, the tempered glass is placed in a chamber and heated to a temperature of around 290°C (554°F) for several hours. This causes any nickel sulphide inclusions that may be present in the glass to expand and shatter. If any shattering occurs during the heat soaking process, it will eliminate the tempered glass panels that would have potentially failed in the field, reducing the likelihood of spontaneous breakage.

The resulting heat soaked glass is considered to be of higher quality and more reliable than regular tempered glass, as it has a reduced risk of sudden and unexpected breakage. Heat soaked glass is commonly used in high-rise buildings, facades, and other applications where the risk of glass breakage is particularly high.

Applications of heat soaked glass

Heat soaked glass is commonly used in applications where safety and reliability are of utmost importance. Some of the main applications of heat soaked glass include:

Facades: Heat soaked glass is frequently used in building facades, particularly in high-rise buildings. This is because the risk of spontaneous breakage is much higher at higher elevations, where the glass is exposed to greater temperature variations and wind loads.

Curtain walls: Curtain walls are another common application for heat soaked glass. Curtain walls are typically made up of large panels of glass, and the use of heat soaked glass can reduce the risk of sudden and unexpected breakage, which could potentially lead to serious injury or property damage.

Skylights: Skylights are another application where heat soaked glass is commonly used. Skylights are exposed to significant temperature fluctuations and can be subject to wind loads and impact from falling debris, making heat soaked glass a safer and more reliable choice.

Balustrades: Heat soaked glass can also be used in balustrades and railings, where safety is a primary concern. By using heat soaked glass, the risk of sudden and unexpected breakage can be reduced, ensuring the safety of those using the structure.

Overall, heat soaked glass is used in any application where safety and reliability are paramount, particularly in buildings and structures where the risk of glass breakage is high.
